Bikes in the Snow

Snow falls heavily in South Bend this day. You have to walk with your head parallel to the ground to keep the snow from stinging your eyes. You can't take full strides so you shuffle your feet in ever decreasing strides to try to keep your balance. The trees bend and creak under the weight of the snow on their branches. Plows don't even bother coming out because their efforts are for naught.

A lonely set of bike treads arcs across the snow covered sidewalk. I am intrigued.

I followed the tread marks as long as I could before losing them in the building snow. Not once did they indicate a slip or a fall. I can barely balance myself without dropping face first into a drift, let alone balance on two thin wheels. Just the wind alone keeps me from walking, and the effects are multiplied when traveling at speed on a bicycle. I can only conclude that the snow bicycler is a great warrior that deserves our respect.

Dan, this sounds like poetry more then one of your amusing posts. I am touched by your beautiful choice of words. You go girl!

There's nothing amusing about the brave men and women who ride their bikes every day in the snow so that you and I don't have to. We owe them our respect for all they do for this great country.
